According to Panama's Ministry of Agricultural Development (Mides), after being significantly affected by the pandemic, the country's melon, squash, and watermelon exports are starting to show a positive trend towards their recovery.
Based on the information provided by producers and agro-export companies located in the provinces of Herrera, Los Santos, Cocle, Veraguas, and Panama Oeste, the Mides estimated that the area planted with these species in the 2021-2022 agricultural cycle would increase by 52.20% over the previous cycle.
Melon planting will increase by 22.32%, watermelon with seeds by 25.15%, seedless watermelon by 86.21%, and squash by 69%. According to Tomas Solis, the Mides' National Director of Agribusiness, as a result of this growth in production, the country will export nearly 2,228 containers worth approximately B/. 29,428,890.00 in the 2021-2022 campaign.
“The recovery of these items is a significant opportunity to improve the quality of life of the people that participate in this agro-export activity, to generate employment in productive areas, to generate foreign exchange, and to improve the income of workers, among other things,” the Ministry highlighted.
