The long overdue overhead footbridge located on Mong Kok Road commenced service on Thursday afternoon at last.
Workers removed barricades and tape at 5pm to let pedestrians to pass through. The footbridge connects to the original one located on Sai Yee Street, allowing citizens to reach MOKO shopping mall and Mong Kok East MTR station directly.
The roof of the footbridge is made of glass and there are also escalators and elevators. Citizens visited the footbridge with their kids as soon as it opened and took pictures as they had a little walk on it.
Some believed that with the footbridge there would be less traffic incidents as they can now walk on it instead of crossing the streets directly.
The construction of this overhead footbridge was gazetted back in 1998. It was funded by Sun Hung Kai Properties and managed by the government.
Works of the extension part of the footbridge commenced in January 2016. The roof building and glass installment works completed in this April, after it was once suspended because of the city's protests and the pandemic.
Yau Tsim Mong district councilor Lee Wai-fung criticized that relevant works were suspended for too long and affected businesses nearby, asking government to impose penalty for the postponemnt.
