Over 100,000 people have signed an online petition, demanding Correctional Services to implement changes in prison cells to alleviate heat situations under record-high temperatures.
The petition was launched by Wall-fare, a group that fights for welfare of prisoners and detainees.
Over 100,000 people have signed the petition within 33 hours, according to Shiu Ka-chun, founder of Wall-fare. He hoped the correctional services would deploy measures that alleviate the heat in prisons due to humanitarian concerns.
Their suggestions include allowing families to purchase supplies like antipyretic stickers, portable fans and sunscreen, providing cold water and allowing inmates to take more showers, as well as installing stronger ventilation facilities.
Wall-fare, alongside former lawmaker Fernando Cheung Chiu-hung and other concern groups, will write to the director of the correctional services to ask for a meeting.
Earlier they received a reply from the correctional services, yet they criticized current measures of the department to be useless.
In the reply, correctional services said apart from regularly updating their fans, they also installed stronger fans and will gradually install new models of gate and windows that provide better air-circulation.
They added that they will grant supplies under different categories to be imported according to prisons’ security system and operations.
