Opposition Primaries: Results Counted Until Thursday Evening

The results of the opposition primaries are being counted and the winner proclaimed as the PM Candidate will run against the incumbent PM in April 2022.

As of today, Thursday, the results of the opposition primaries will be counted and the winner announced as the prime ministerial candidate who will run against the incumbent prime minister in April 2022. If none of the top candidates receives more than 50 percent of the vote today, the primary will move to the next round. Candidates are Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony, center-politician, conservative mayor of the eastern city of Hódmezővásárhely, Péter Márki-Zay, Klára Dobrev, of the left-liberal Democratic Coalition, Péter Jakab of Jobbik, and András Fekete-Győr of the liberal Momentum Party.

About 700,000 people participated in the opposition’s primary election, where they could vote for a candidate in their own district, as well as for a single joint prime ministerial candidate. Votes could be cast at numerous election booths throughout the country. According to the first results, Klára Dobrev, the wife of former Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány is currently leading the race.

So far, the final data for 70 areas have been published, Telex reported. In the countryside, Klára Dobrev won all but one constituency, while Péter Jakab (Jobbik party leader) won the Szabolcs constituency (in the county). This is the only victory so far for the party leader, who performed poorly compared to Jobbik’s strength.

Here is an inphogram about the candidates’ position so far (via HVG):

However, the results of the individual candidates are constantly being posted on the Primaries 2021 (Előválasztások 2021) Facebook page. The National Primary Election Committee (OEVB) will present the results since the earlier briefing once an hour in a Facebook live video, 24.hu reported.
