Nine Hong Kong universities occupy positions in the top 100 of the 2023 QS World University Rankings of Asia, but all have seen a drop in their ranking compared to last year.
Hong Kong boasts "one of the highest concentrations of top-class universities in the world," according to the latest report of QS World University Rankings, featuring one-third of its universities in Asia’s top 20 and more than half in the top 50.
Of these, the University of Hong Kong, the highest ranked among the city’s academic institutions, fills the fourth place of the rankings - down one place compared to last year.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) are listed in the top 20 of the rankings, placing twelfth and fourteenth, seeing a drop of one and five places from last year, respectively.
Hong Kong emerged as "Asia’s pre-eminent producer of high-quality research," according to QS’ measure of scholarly impact, Citations per Paper, with two institutions ranking among the region’s top 5 for this indicator.
Only Singapore boasts as many institutions in this band, but HKUST takes the region’s top spot.
“It is shown that Hong Kong enjoys features including the outstanding level of high-impact research, high international faculty and student cohort, and exceptionally high concentration of top-tier universities,” said the ranking report.
However, the ranking indicated low productivity is also seen in the local research output.
"It is a testament to Hong Kong’s resilience that few territories in the world boast such a concentrated singularity of higher-education excellence," said QS Senior Vice President Ben Sowter.
In terms of other Asian areas, Peking University claims Asia’s top spot for the first time, interrupting the four-year run of the National University of Singapore - which dropped to second place - as the region’s best university.
Mainland China is featured as Asia’s most represented location, with 128 listed academic institutions, followed by India with 118 and Japan with 106.
