New education union to focus on teachers' complaints

A new education union is established today, a day after the 48-year-old Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union was dissolved.

Among the seven executives at Hong Kong Education Workers Union, five are also leaders at the pro-establishment Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers.

The new union's chairman is Wong Kin-ho, who is a vice principal at The Yuen Yuen Institute MFBM Nei Ming Chan Lui Chung Tak Memorial College. The other executives are teachers from kindergartens, primary and secondary schools.

The union was established after a year's preparation, and will focus on teachers' rights and cases of them seeking help.

Wong said the new union will not look into teachers' political stance when handling their cases.

It is now processing four cases involving employment contracts and dispute with school principals. They will be referred to lawyers or mediators.

However, the union will not handle teachers' professional misconduct cases. It will also refuse to “shelter” teachers who break the law, he said.
