National Games flag passed to Hong Kong

The National Games flag has been passed to Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, as the city will co-host the mega event in 2025.

The closing ceremony of the Shaanxi National Games took place at a fully packed gymnasium at the Xi’an Olympic Sports Center on Monday evening, attended by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

Governor of Shaanxi province Zhao Yide passed the flag of the National Games to the director of the State General Administration of Sports Gou Zhongwen, signaling the end of the Shaanxi games this year.

The flag was then passed on to Guangdong governor Ma Xingrui and the chief executives of the two SARs -- Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor and Ho Iat-seng -- who will jointly host the next National Games four years later.

Hong Kong sent a 169-strong delegation to this year’s National Games and competed in the finals of 18 different events. Its athletes bagged two gold and five bronze medals, among which two golds and two bronzes were won by cyclists.

Top Hong Kong cyclist Sarah Lee Wai-sze snatched one gold and one bronze in keirin and sprint in track cycling to start off the games, while Lee Sze-wing won another gold for Hong Kong in women’s road cycling.
