The Ministry of Public Security of Panama (Minseg) announced this Saturday that they have rescued some 50 victims of human trafficking, after two operations carried out in the capital city and in the interior of the country.
The ministry explains that among the rescued people are women and men from Nicaragua, Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba and even a minor from Cambodia, who were under the control of criminal organizations who call act as dedicated to the crime against human trafficking.
Several of the victims who recovered their freedom and returned to their respective countries. A young woman returned to Costa Rica, who was flown by the National Naval Air Service (Senan) to Changuinola, from where the National Police transferred her to the border point in Sixaola in Bocas del Toro province, and there the case was handed over to the National Commission against the Smuggling of Migrants and Human Trafficking and the Immediate Response Team (Conatt - ERI) of the neighboring country.
Another woman victim of human trafficking was brought to Panama to be placed in the labor force; while another of the victim victims was offered the support of being able to also enter the labor market through the benefit of “Temporary Humanitarian Protection Work”.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Security indicates that the delivery of food bags and personal items for the 28 victims was arranged with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (Unodc), as part of the support that has been given to these people during the coronavirus pandemic.
It is worth mentioning that the crime of trafficking in persons is considered the third most lucrative illegal business in the world, after drug trafficking and arms trafficking.
