A man who contracts a bogus marriage with a pregnant mainlander, in order to let her obtain a booking for delivery in Hong Kong, was sentenced to 12 months.
The 59-year-old defendant is a Hong Kong resident and married a mainland pregnant woman in Hong Kong in August 2019. The woman successfully obtained a Confirmation Certificate on Delivery Booking from a private hospital for delivery services under her marital relationship with the defendant.
The Immigration Department doubted the marital relationship between the two and conducted an investigation. The defendant admitted that under the arrangement of a middleman, he was paid HK$20,000 as a reward to contract a bogus marriage with the woman. The women finally could not give birth in Hong Kong.
The defendant was charged with one count of conspiracy to defraud and one count of conspiracy to obtain services by deception.
He pleaded guilty to the charges at Sha Tin Magistrates' Courts on Wednesday and was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment for each charge and the sentences are to run concurrently.
An investigation of other suspects is continuing.
