Man imprisoned for taking upskirt videos of young girls using hidden shoe camera

And you thought only spies in movies would hide things in their shoes...

A 47-year-old construction worker was on Thursday jailed for 24 weeks for using a camera hidden in one of his shoes to take upskirt videos of young girls in June.

Leung Ka-wai earlier pleaded guilty to 17 counts of committing an act outraging public decency for taking upskirt videos of 16 young girls and a woman in shopping malls and supermarkets between June 1 and 19.

The West Kowloon Court heard that police officers on patrol found Leung acting weirdly and intercepted him on June 19, only to find a tiny camera hidden in his right shoe and the battery in his right sock. Officers also found that the upskirt videos could be sent to Leung’s phone through the internet.

Further investigations revealed 92 upskirt videos on Leung's phone, and 17 were taken in public places. Police then identified that 16 victims were underage children, some wearing Snow White, and school dresses.

In mitigation, the defense said Leung regretted his crimes and would place his prison ID number on his desk at home to remind himself not to commit the crime again.

The defense added Leung had low self-esteem and no sense of achievement over history with his ex-girlfriend and hoped the court would hand down a lenient sentence.

However, Judge Jeffrey Sze Cho-yiu said the court must hand down a deterrent sentence as Leung's crimes left the victims insecure and made the public sick.

Sze continued that Leung committed his crimes well-prepared, and about 100 females fell victim to his hidden camera, which called for a heavier jail term.

Given that Leung had two similar criminal records in the past and is likely to commit the crime again in the future, Sze put Leung behind bars for 24 weeks after factoring in his guilty plea.
