Man carrying crack cocaine worth HK$1.38m arrested by customs

An 18-year-old man was on Thursday arrested by customs after officers caught him carrying 1.1kg of crack cocaine worth HK$1.38 million during a Tseung Kwan O drug raid.

The man claimed to be jobless and has been charged with trafficking in a dangerous drug. He will appear in the Eastern Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (Sat).

During the operation conducted Thursday afternoon, customs' officers intercepted the man outside a private residential building on Tong Yin Street and found two bags of crack cocaine, weighing 1.1kg in total, inside a paper bag carried by him.

He was then arrested and was further escorted to a flat nearby, where officers also sized some drug packaging equipment. .

Customs expected the drug would be mainly supplied to the east Kowloon district and added that flat was rented by the man under his name, with a monthly rate of HK$16,000.

Officers also believed the flat was used for drug packaging and as a warehouse, and they are still investigating the source of the drug.

Customs again reminded the public that trafficking in dangerous drugs is a serious offense, and the maximum penalty upon conviction carries a fine of HK$5 million and life imprisonment.
