Man and woman arrested after robbing a backpack in jewelry store

A man and a woman were arrested on Thursday after the man splashed red unknown liquid at a shopkeeper of a Yuen Long jewelry shop and robbed a backpack containing about HK$380,000 cash and belongings.

The robbery took place around 5.30pm on Monday. A man stormed into a jewelry store on Hop Choi Street in Yuen Long and splashed red unknown liquid at the 42-year-old shopkeeper surnamed Chan.

The robber then grabbed a backpack containing about HK$380,000 cash and belongings, which was placed on the countertop, and ran away, heading towards Tai Tong Road.

After investigation, police on Thursday arrested a 45-year-old man surnamed Choi in Tuen Mun and a 24-year-old woman surnamed Yu in Tin Shui Wai for robbery. Choi suspectedly planned and carried out the robbery, while Yu kept a lookout for Choi.

Officers only found HK$32,500 of cash at Choi's home, and some drugs worth about HK75,000 at the Yu's home. Yu was also arrested for trafficking in dangerous drugs and possessing instrument fit for smoking dangerous drugs.

Police are still investigating what was the red unknown liquid that Choi splashed at Chan, adding that Chan was not heavily injured after the splashing.

Police continued that the investigation is still underway and didn't rule out more arrests to be made.
