Malachite green in grass carp sample from a supermarket in Tseung Kwan O

A grass carp sample taken from the ParknShop in TKO Gateway was found to contain malachite green, the Centre for Food Safety said.

Currently, malachite green has been prohibited for use in food-producing animals in many countries.

The test result showed that the sample contained malachite green at a level of 0.7 parts per billion.

The spokesman said that the CFS has informed the vendor concerned and instructed the vendor to stop selling the affected product. It is also tracing the source and distribution of the product concerned.

A prosecution may be instituted if any sufficient evidence is found.

Malachite green is a type of industrial dye and has been used for treating infections in fish.

No food sold in Hong Kong is allowed to contain malachite green. Offenders will be prosecuted and will be liable to a fine of HK$50,000 and to imprisonment for six months upon conviction.
