Tonyee Chow Hang-tung, vice chairwoman of an alliance that organized the annual June 4 vigil, wrote a public letter to call upon members not to disband the group.
She disagreed with chairman of Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China Lee Check-yan and vice chairman Albert Ho Chun-yan, who called upon disbandment in a letter earlier. Both of the remanded men said disbandment is the best possible solution at the moment.
Chow, also in custody, wrote two letters which were uploaded onto her Facebook on Thursday. One was written before Lee and Ho wrote their letter, while one was written after.
In the first letter, Chow gave the examples of Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union and Civil Human Rights Front, saying state media still pointed fingers at them although they are disbanded.
She also said disbanding the group will definitely frustrate the democratic movement and make future work tougher.
“I still hope to show what the alliance believes in to the world and continue what we are doing for the past 32 years,” she added.
In the second letter, Chow insisted on her original position, saying that disbanding the alliance will do no good.
She also pointed out the alliance will irreversibly lose its voice and rights to speak out if the self-disbandment comes true. There won't be any possibility for the alliance to continue their democratic movement as well, she added.
“Please object to the disbandment motion and give the alliance another chance to continue and move forward,” Chow wrote in the letter.
