Hungary evacuates 540 persons from Kabul

The Hungarian Defense Forces have evacuated 540 persons from Kabul, including every known Hungarian citizen in Afghanistan who wished to leave, Defence Minister Tibor Benkő said on Thursday at a special press briefing.

The evacuees include Hungarian, U.S., Austrian and Afghan citizens, the minister said.

The Afghans who have helped Hungarian military forces in the past 18 years and who have made contact with the Hungarian authorities have also all been evacuated, Benkő said. He added that this covers 87% of Afghans who have had dealings with Hungarians and includes 57 families and 180 children.

The Hungarian Defense Forces started their evacuation mission on August 19 and carried it out in seven days, Benkő noted.
