Housing costs account for over 1/5 of household expenditure

In 2020, 'housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels' represented 22.7% of household expenditure in Hungary, up by 2.1 percentage points compared with 2019, state news wire MTI reports, citing data by Eurostat.

Housing costs in the EU accounted for 25.7% of household expenditure on average last year, up by 2.2 percentage points compared to the year before.

Last year, housing costs accounted for 18.8% of household spending in Romania, 20.9% in Poland, 28.4% in Czechia and 30.7% in Slovakia.

In 2020, housing costs accounted for the biggest share of household expenditure in Hungary, followed by spending on food and non-alcoholic beverages, which accounted for 18.7% of spending, and transport costs, which accounted for 11.3%.
