Hong Kong students excel at International Junior Science Olympiad

The Hong Kong team of six students received two gold and four silver medals at the 18th Junior Science Olympiad held in the United Arab Emirates from 12 to 21 December.

Students Ng Shuk-hei and Suen Ming-to from St Paul's Co-educational College each won a gold medal. At the same time, the four silver medalists are Kyan Cheung from Victoria Shanghai Academy, Choi Ho-long from Pui Ching Middle School, Mai Tai-sheuk from Queen's College, and Wong Chun-lam from G.T. (Ellen Yeung) College.

The young winners were congratulated on their outstanding performance by Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung.

"The impressive results of the Hong Kong team this year have demonstrated our students' tremendous potential in science and technology," Yeung said.

"The Education Bureau will continue its support on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education to nurture technology talents and encourage them to pursue a career in innovation and scientific research," he continued.

The Olympiad, open to students aged 15 or below, saw around 320 students from 70 countries and regions participate in the competition covering physics, chemistry, and biology and comprised of written assessments and science experiments.

Due to the epidemic, students participated in their own country or region under online monitoring and joined online activities.
