Hong Kong raises typhoon warning signal No 3, with Saudel nearing

The No 3 signal was issued at 12.20am, with typhoon within 570km (354 miles) of city.

The Hong Kong Observatory issued a No 3 warning signal at 12.20am on Friday as Typhoon Saudel edged closer to the city.

The signal indicates winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62km/h (39mph) are expected.

The forecaster said the No 3 signal was expected to remain in force on Friday morning.

It replaced a standby No 1 signal, which was raised at 5.40pm on Thursday, indicating a tropical cyclone within 800km (497 miles) of the city.

At midnight, Typhoon Saudel was estimated to be about 570km (354 miles) south-southeast of Hong Kong, and was forecast to slowly move northwest across the central part of the South China Sea.

According to the latest projections, the storm will continue to edge closer to the southern coast of China, with strong winds expected to affect the region of the Pearl River Delta. There will also be occasional gales on high ground in Hong Kong.

The public is advised to stay away from the shoreline and not engage in any activities nearby.
