Police said late on Thursday (July 1) they were investigating an attempted murder and suicide after a man attacked a police officer from behind at 10.05 p.m. (1405 GMT), then stabbed himself in the chest with the knife.

The man was sent to hospital, where he died about an hour later. The policeman, 28, sustained a 10 centimeters wound on his back and a punctured lung and underwent surgery, police said.

Speaking to reporters early on Friday (July 2), Tang said the stabbing was a "local lone wolf terrorist attack."

He said police searched the home of the 50-year-old, whom he did not identify, and said materials on his computer showed he was "radicalized," without providing further detail.
