Hong Kong Palace Museum to open to the public by mid-year

Construction of the Hong Kong Palace Museum, a future cultural landmark of the city, is mostly completed and is expected to be opened for public viewing by mid-year, according to Betty Fung Ching Suk-yee, CEO of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority.

The museum is expected to exhibit more than 900 pieces from the Beijing Palace Museum’s national treasures — 166 of which are first-class cultural relics of China.

Fung said the museum will be charging visitors an admission fee, with details to be announced at a later date.

The opening date of the museum will also depend on the progress of the furnishing work, she added.

Director of the museum Louis Ng Chi-wa said the museum will feature nine gallery halls, with seven of them designed for long-term exhibitions lasting for up to two years, whereas the other two were intended for short-term exhibitions lasting between three to six months.

Ng previously noted that the Hong Kong Palace Museum will enhance cooperation not only with museums on the Chinese mainland but also with those in the rest of the world.

“The new museum will make promoting Chinese culture and history education in Hong Kong a priority…the museum will also have partnerships with schools and educational organizations to bring Chinese culture to different communities,” said Ng.
