The Education Bureau is developing teachers' conduct guidelines to strengthen national education, confirmed Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu on Thursday.
Teachers will be required to "be cautious" about their professional conduct, and should set an example to cultivate "a sense of national identity" among students, said Lee at the Teachers' Day and Commendation Certificate Presentation Ceremony.
He added that the government would also strengthen teachers' proper concepts concerning the Constitution, the Basic Law, the "one country, two systems" principle, and national security in a holistic manner.
"Newly appointed teachers in all public sector schools will be required to pass the Basic Law Test," Lee emphasised.
Secretary for Education Christine Choi Yuk-lin confirmed the guidelines on teachers' professional conduct would be published this year, noting the government will continue to enhance the professional training of teachers.
A total of 1,520 teachers, the second highest number on record, were paid tribute at the ceremony for their dedication to the teaching profession this year, said Lin Chun-pong, Chairman of the Committee on Respect Our Teachers Campaign.
"I believe the upcoming Policy Address next month will push forward the education of the youth in Hong Kong," he added.
