Heavy rains leave mountains of garbage on Tsuen Wan, Lantau beaches

Beaches in Tsuen Wan and Lantau Island were piled with garbage after recent rainstorms, as a lifeguard union said they had taken out 20 bags of trash from Pui O Beach alone.

Hong Kong Government Lifeguards General Union posted on social media that a large amount of debris was seen on the beaches, including water bottles, metal cans, food packaging, and other disposable garbage.

The post read that these had taken lifeguards and outsourced cleaners days in the sun and rain to clean up, and more than 20 bags of trash were collected from Pui O Beach on Lantau Island.

The union called on citizens not to litter in public when going to the countryside or islands, which not only violated the law, but the garbage may be washed into the ocean by rain, causing marine pollution and killing marine life.
