Government urged to orderly reopen leisure and cultural venues

Lawmaker Ma Fung-kwok has urged the Hong Kong government to reopen some of its cultural, recreational and sports facilities in an orderly manner, after being closed for months.

The sports, performing arts, culture and publication sector lawmaker slammed the government over the lack of objective criteria.

“Even the Lunar New Year fairs are allowed to reopen under certain requirements, the government would not allow sports activities that only consist of around a dozen people to continue in the same venue,” said Ma.

He said the respective industries are also willing to comply with the restriction on the number of persons allowed in the activities, undergo regular testing and set up tracking records.

Ma said the government’s one-size-fits-all approach in anti-epidemic measures will soon “starve” the industries to death.
