Football team evacuated for colonial-era bomb scare

A mortar round was found and set off by police in a football training center in Tseung Kwan O today.

Police received a report this afternoon that a Jockey Club HKFA Football Training Center staff member discovered a suspected explosive on the playground of the center when he was weeding the place at around 1:45pm.

Police rushed to the scene and found the object, which, after a preliminary inspection, was confirmed by firefighters to be a British mortar round.

Officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bureau confirmed the environmental circumstances and detonated the round at about 4pm after a local football team, Lee Man, was evacuated.

No injuries were reported.
