Five million people to receive the first batch of e-vouchers

More than 5 million people will receive the first batch of electronic consumption vouchers worth HK$2,000 on August 1, Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po said.

Registration for the Consumption Voucher Scheme had been open for two weeks, Chan wrote on his blog that over 6.1 million people have registered.

Chan said the local economy has improved starting from this year, the economy grew 7.9 percent in the first quarter which ended six quarters growth decline.

He expected the economy will continue to improve.

“The unemployment rate has dropped from the high point at 7.2 percent early this year to 6 percent in May. The newest unemployment rate for April to June will be announced this week, it is expected that the figure will show further improvement and drop to the level of more than a year ago,” Chan said.

The upcoming unemployment and underemployment statistics will be released on Tuesday (July 20). According to the Census and Statistics Department, the unemployment rate had stayed 6 percent or above since April last year.
