First racing day racks up HK$1.4 billion

The Jockey Club has racked up a record high turnover of over HK$1.4 billion on the first day of the new racing season today as public punters were allowed into Sha Tin Racecourse as the pandemic eases.

The amount is a 4.72 percent increase from the opening day last year.

Attendance at the Sha Tin and Happy Valley racecourses reached 17,563 today - much higher than last year's 285, when public attendance was banned.

This year, punters can enter the racecourses via appointment.

The highlight race of the season opening day was the Chief Executive’s Cup, in which Naboo Attack, ridden by 31-year-old Mauritian jockey Karis Teetan, claimed victory in the Class One 1,200-meter event.
