Although all 106 candidates of the ruling Fidesz party have collected the required number of signatures to run in their individual constituencies in the April 3 general election, the party will continue its signature drive "as a show of strength", a senior party official has said.
Fidesz has more than 2,500 stands set up across the country with activists collecting signatures, Istvan Hollik, the party’s communications director, said in a video message on Tuesday.
“It’s important for us to show that there are a lot of us and that we won’t let the common achievements of the last 12 years go to waste,” Hollik said. “And we won’ let [Democratic Coalition leader] Ferenc Gyurcsany and his people return to politics, either.”
“The past must not come back; Hungary must move forward, not backwards,” he said.
On Saturday, Hollik announced that the individual candidates of the Fidesz-Christian Democrat alliance were the first to collect the required number of signatures to run in their respective districts.
