The stringent social distancing measures will be extended for two weeks to February 3, the third day of the Lunar New Year, while large-scale festive activities, including flower market and new year fairs, will be canceled.
Under the current social distancing measures, restaurants cannot offer dine-in service after 6pm every night, while cinemas, entertainment centers, karaoke establishments, and other premises must close.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor attended a press conference and made the announcement on Thursday evening.
Lam hinted that the social distancing measures will probably be relaxed gradually starting February 4, given that the pandemic situation will not change drastically.
However, the reopening for scheduled premises, including beauty parlors and fitness centers, must be covered by the “vaccine bubble,” meaning citizens must be vaccinated before entering these premises.
On another note, flights ban imposed on eight countries including Australia, Canada, France, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, the UK and the US will be extended until February 4.
Meanwhile, Armenia, Bonaire, Guatemala and New Caledonia will be listed high-risk Group A specified places starting next Monday (Jan 17).
