The case of a 25-year-old man, whose driving led to the fatal San Po Kong crash on Friday, has been adjourned to this Friday as he was hospitalized and unable to attend court.
Ryan Ng Ka-chun, 25, was absent from his first hearing at Kwun Tong magistrates' courts yesterday. The court was told that Ng remained in Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
His lawyer said Ng was willing to hand over his driving license, travel documents and report to the police as one of the conditions for his bail application.
However, principal magistrate Bina Chainrai dismissed his bail application.
The hearing was rescheduled for Friday or immediately after Ng's hospital discharge, depending on whichever is earlier.
Ng was charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death in the crash on Tai Yau Street on New Year's Eve, killing a 23-year-old woman, Shi Wuyang, and a 63-year-old man, Li Wing-keung.
Shi died at the scene after sustaining head injuries while Li was declared dead after being taken to United Christian Hospital.
The crash happened at around 6pm on New Year's Eve when a yellow BMW being driven along Tai Yau Street rammed into a taxi before mounting the pavement and smashing into the gate of a money exchange store. The crash injured five passersby.
Three other pedestrians, aged between 28 and 63, were injured.
Dozens went to the crash site to pay tribute to the dead on Sunday, laying flowers and leaving fruits.
Shi, who lived in Tsz Hong Estate in Tsz Wan Shan, was a graduate of Lingnan University. Her parents who reside in Shantou, Guangdong, came to Hong Kong via the Return2hk scheme upon learning of her death.
Some 50 of Shi's relatives and colleagues, including her parents, gathered to mourn her at around 4pm on New Year's Day, with Shi's clothes being placed on the roadside railing.
Li, who worked as an electrician in San Po Kong, lived in Tong Wong House of Tong Ming Court in Tseung Kwan O alone after his mother passed away a few years ago.
