Ex-cop who allegedly rapes and impregnates domestic helper granted bail

A 69-year-old retired policeman was granted HK$20,000 bail after he allegedly raped a foreign domestic helper 11 times in 2019 and impregnated her, who decided to keep the baby because of her religion.

The case was first mentioned on Friday in Sha Tin Magistrates' Courts and the ex-cop needed not to enter plea yet.

Chan Man was charged with one count of indecent assault, 11 counts of rape and one count of perverting the course of justice.

Chan allegedly indecently assault the helper, identified as X in court, in the kitchen of a flat in Wu Kai Sha Village one day in December 2018.

Chan also allegedly raped X 11 times in that flat in Wu Kai Sha Village and in another flat at Lee On Estate in Ma On Shan between one day in January and November 29 in 2019.

The third charge alleged that Chan texted X to incite or induce her to stop initializing prosecution procedures against him between December 25, 2019 to February 10, 2020.

It was understood X became pregnant after the incident and gave birth to the baby because of her religion. Although now she is not in the city, she is willing to return to Hong Kong and testify against Chan.

The case has been adjourned to December 28 in the Eastern Magistrates' Courts and will be then passed to the High Court.

Until the next hearing Chan must not leave the city and must hand over all his travel documents. He must also report to a police station once every week and must not contact witnesses summoned by the prosecution including X herself and related employment agents.
