An exhibition hall showcasing historic relics will be open to the public after the redevelopment of Shau Kei Wan's Ming Wah building is completed.
The building, located on A Kung Ngam Road, was first built in 1966. In 2011, the Housing Society began redeveloping the estate.
The first phase was completed last year, after which the building housed 966 rental units. Demolition work for the second phase is likely to begin this year with redevelopment expected to be completed by 2035.
The redeveloped building is expected to provide over 3,919 units.
However, the society aims to furnish the building with more than just residential units. The society's corporate communication director, Pamela Leung Yi-lin, said many historical objects associated with the estate have been preserved, including a plaque from the building's opening ceremony in the 1960s, steel post boxes and a vintage grille wall.
These objects are expected to be shown to the public in due time.
The society will also hold community engagement activities such as photo contests during the redevelopment process.
The building was built after mainland immigrants fled to Hong Kong en masse during the 1950s, exacerbating the city's housing shortage. With at least 350,000 residents in desperate need of housing at the time, low-cost options such as the Ming Wah building were built.
The society is currently also redeveloping Yue Kwong Chuen in Aberdeen and Kwun Tong Garden Estate II.
