Escalator step breaks apart at Chai Wan MTR station

An escalator step suddenly snapped off this morning at Chai Wan MTR station, following a similar incident in Tsim Sha Tsui Station yesterday.

The incident occurred at around 11.40 am at the platform within the station. One of the steps at the top of the upward-moving escalator is out of line and damaged, with metal scraps flying everywhere.

Staffers were signalled by the light in the control room that the escalator had stopped operating. As workers arrived at the scene, they found the upper part of the escalator broken.

The area was cordoned off immediately, and a sweater believed to belong to a passenger was found stuck between the escalator steps.

A similar escalator step burst accident happened on Saturday at Tsim Sha Tsui station. It was caused by a passenger's shoe that stuck in the escalator and damaged the steps.
