Ecuador will restart domestic and international flights in June 2020

National Service for Risk and Emergency Management (Sngre) reported on Sunday, May 24, that operations will resume operations on June 1, 2020. Ecuador has maintained local and international commercial flights suspended since March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The national Emergency Operations Committee (COE), in charge of the coronavirus crisis, decided to authorize on Monday, June 1, 2020, the restart of regular international and domestic commercial air operations in all airports in the country. The Sngre in its electronic portal added that the COE resolved to re-establish flights with 30% frequency authorized to the airlines.

The Interior Minister, María Paula Romo, had reported the restart on Friday, May 22, but according to AFP sources it was only intended for domestic flights.

The authorities have announced that also from June 1 they will require travelers to present the negative PCR test (nasopharyngeal swab), performed no later than 72 hours before boarding a flight.

In order to contain the spread of the new coronavirus, the government decreed a state of emergency in mid-March. It also suspended face-to-face work and school classes. Movement of vehicles was restricted by a 15-hour curfew a day to promote the confinement of the population. These measures are still maintained.

Since the state of emergency was declared, airports have maintained cargo operations, and humanitarian repatriation flights have been allowed.

Two weeks ago, Ecuador began to de-escalate the confinement and the 221 cantons passed an 8-hour curfew instead of 15.
