Disney+ is coming to Hong Kong on November 16, Disney announced yesterday. It will charge a monthly fee of HK$73 and up to seven users can use one account.
Disney's online streaming platform will bring content from around the world to Hong Kong audiences, offering over 1,200 movies and 16,000 episodes on the first day from its collection of six iconic brands, including Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and Star.
Alongside the traditional Disney princess films, it will also include the likes of Marvel Studios' Iron Man and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, as well as original TV series such as WandaVision and The Mandalorian.
Disney+ has also added a Hong Kong movie channel for local users, including titles like the Cold War series, The Grandmaster and The Mermaid.
The platform currently supports 23 languages, including English, Japanese and Korean, and will increase to 28 in the future. There will be Cantonese dubbing and Chinese subtitles for audiences in Hong Kong.
In addition, Disney+ supports streaming on up to 4 devices at the same time, and the 4K quality videos can be downloaded on up to 10 devices. Each account can have up to seven users.
Netflix, another streaming platform, charges subscription fees ranging from HK$63 to HK$93 per month, depending on the number of devices which can stream at the same time, and video quality. For Disney+, the annual fee is HK$738.
Francis Fong Po-kiu, honorary president of Hong Kong Information Technology Federation, said Disney+ "can emerge as a strong competitor in Hong Kong's online streaming platforms market ... but how competitive it can be depends in the variety of program choices available."
