Deficit may hit HK$300 billion, financial secretary estimates

The Financial Secretary, Paul Chan Mo-po expected the government to record a HK$300 billion deficit, but an increase in stamp duty revenue last year might alleviate the situation.

Speaking on a radio program, Chan said it will be difficult to include cash handouts in his upcoming budget, but there will be a combination of measures to help alleviate people's burden under the pandemic. He added that the authorities will study how resources could be given to needy people.

The 2021/22 Budget will be announced on February 24.
