A dead Bryde's whale was found in the waters between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, suspected to be the whale nicknamed "little Bryde".
Shenzhen authorities announced on August 30 that they found the dead whale.
It was suspected to be "Little Bryde," the Bryde's whale first photographed in the Xiaomeisha waters in Yantian District, Shenzhen at the end of July. It has shown up in the waters of Dapeng New District and Yantian District in the past months.
The Ho Koon Nature Education cum Astronomical Centre said in a post on social media that Bryde's whales are still a relatively unknown species among large baleen whales.
The post goes on to say that the whale recently spotted in Dapeng Bay waters is believed to be a Balaenoptera edeni and that they have been preying in the waters around Dapeng Bay from June to August this year.
"They open their mouths wide to the sky, forming a trap and catch fishes from below, while terns also take the opportunity to come and prey the fish around their mouths," the post said.
The dead whale has been washed ashore, and the cause of death is being investigated.
