CUHK Medical Centre announces a case of misidentification of two babies

The Chinese University of Hong Kong Medical Centre has reported an incident of misidentification of two babies to the government. It was asked by the authorities to submit a detailed report within four weeks.

In response to media enquiries, a spokesman for the Department of Health said they received notification from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of CUHK Medical Centre last Friday about the case of the baby mix-up.

The incident was revealed as the staff had given the wrong newborn baby to a mother for breastfeeding and only discovered the blunder after about 3 minutes.

The two babies are in healthy condition after check-ups, the CUHK Medical Centre added. The two mothers and their babies were discharged on Saturday and Sunday.

The Centre had contacted and met with the families involved to express their sincerest apologies. The staff member concerned has ceased carrying out relevant duties.
