Company by Demosisto's members fined over failing masks

Chung Chi Ltd, a company set up by members of the disbanded Demosisto was fined HK$10,000 as customs found the masks they manufactured didn't reach the standards of requirements.

The company was charged with possessing false trade description goods for sale, trade or manufacture.

Former vice chair Isaac Cheng Ka-long and standing committee member Tobias Leung Yin-fung faced the same charge as well. Yet they didn't appear in court today. It was understood that Cheng and Leung was a board member and key officer of Chung Chi Ltd.

Customs raided an industrial building on Tai Yau Street in San Po Kong on May 22 last year and seized 935 boxes of surgical masks which were labeled as “ASTM Level 1” worth HK$93,500.

Customs then sent those masks for examinations and experts found those masks failed to reach the standard of requirements, meaning Chung Chi Ltd was in violation of the Trade Descriptions Ordinance.

The representative of Chung Chi appeared in Kwun Tong Magistrates' Courts on Thursday and pleaded guilty to the charge. The judge fined the company for HK$10,000 and all the masks would be kept by customs.

A restaurant which sold those masks in the store, The Artlab by Favilla and its operator Leung Pak-ho were charged with supplying or offering to supply false trade description goods. Leung has yet to enter plea and the case has been adjourned to November 11.
