Cold spell to linger as snow hits just up north

Temperatures will remain at 11 degrees Celsius at the lowest today before rebounding to 14 on Thursday, the weatherman said.

The cold front affecting Guangdong from Sunday night has brought snow to Lianzhou in Qingyuan, where people woke up to their city covered in white. But temperatures in Hong Kong will dip to 13 degrees on the second day of the Lunar New Year holiday, Monday.

The Observatory said the cold weather has been brought on by the winter monsoon from the north.

The cold weather warning on the weekend remained in effect as of yesterday.

The observatory predicts the chilly weather could last until tomorrow.

For the next few days, Hong Kong will be mainly cloudy and dry, with moderate to fresh northerly winds and cold mornings.

People are advised to dress up warm, avoid prolonged exposure to cold winds and ensure adequate indoor ventilation. The elderly and those with chronic diseases are advised to pay attention.

"Make sure heaters are safe before use, and place them away from any combustibles. Do not light fires indoors as a means to keep warm. Please ensure that there is plenty of fresh air in your room when you are using an old-type gas water heater," the observatory said.

The weather will be mainly fine in the latter parts of the week, but the temperature differences between the days and nights will vary.

Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to rise to around 15 and 16 degrees on Lunar New Year's Eve and on New Year's day, when the weather will be mainly cloudy with sunny intervals.

Temperatures could reach as high as 21 degrees on January 22, before dropping again the following day.

Temperature also dropped in Guangdong and other parts of southern China due to the strong cold front.

Winds and even snowfalls were observed in some areas in the past few days.

The reading was lower than 10 degrees across Guangdong.

Different levels of cold weather warnings have been issued across the province and remained in effect yesterday. The highest level of red warnings were issued in some northern parts, including Lianzhou, predicting temperature of below zero degree in some mountainous areas.
