City Forum called to a stop after 41 years

The 41-year-old RTHK program City Forum has been called to a stop as a mainland drama takes its time slot.

The live forum took place at Victoria Park weekly, during which representatives from across the political spectrum debated on hot topics in current affairs. It usually went through a summer break, but the latest program schedules show the forum will not return.

The schedule shows that a mainland drama, Decisive Battle, will continue to take the time slot of City Forum today and next Sunday. The CCTV production explores the civil wars between the Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintang.

RTHK advisor David Ho Chung-yan said programming is part of RTHK's internal affairs and he would not comment on it. He did not answer whether RTHK will stop all programs related to politics, but said new programs will be launched. Sports are important right now and as a result, more sports programs will be made, he said.

The public broadcaster offered a similar answer earlier.

According to the Charter of RTHK, the radio enjoys editorial independence.

City Forum was broadcast on TVB from 1980 to 2016, after which RTHK broadcast it on its own channel.

The last episode of the last season was broadcast on July 18 this year, and was about the government's proposal to ban disposable plastic tableware.
