Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung and former Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung Kin-chung were among 30 persons appointed as Justices of the Peace.
Cheung was appointed as Non-official Justice of the Peace, while Tang and 28 others were appointed as Official Justices of the Peace.
According to the government, the main function of Justices of the Peace is to visit correctional institutions, detention centers or other institutions to ensure their effective management and that no individual is unfairly treated or deprived of his or her rights.
The Justices of the Peace will ensure that complaints lodged by individuals are handled in a fair and transparent manner, it said.
