Higher energy prices have put about 21,000 SMEs in a difficult position, the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry said on Friday.
MKIK said a "significant part" of those businesses are in sectors that don't allow them to pass on higher energy costs to consumers. These businesses may have to operate at a loss, putting them at risk of going bust after a period of time, it added.
MKIK chairman László Parragh said the announcement by the government on Thursday that some small businesses will be allowed to join the regulated electricity and gas market for retail consumers is "in complete harmony" with a recommendation made by the chamber.
The chamber also proposed a temporary freeze of other fees charged by energy suppliers along with a prohibition on the introduction of new fees.
