Biden to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan by September 11

The Biden administration will pull its remaining 2,500 troops out of Afghanistan by September 11 of this year, ending the United States's longest-running war after 20 years.

Biden's fellow Democrats in Congress largely supported his move but Republicans said the move posed a security threat to the US.

Former President Donald Trump had set a withdrawal deadline for May 1.

Biden has said the answer to the violence in Afghanistan was not a military one.
