Beijing official takes views on electoral reform

A Beijing official responsible for Hong Kong affairs took part in a forum to consult Hongkongers regarding the electoral reform and the implementation of “patriots ruling Hong Kong”.

Director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office Xia Baolong have participated in a two-day forum held by the Central Government in Shenzhen, to consult different sectors in Hong Kong on how to perfect Hong Kong’s electoral system, as well as the implementation of “patriots ruling Hong Kong.”

This came a week after Xia made a keynote speech in a summit, saying that there should be changes in Hong Kong’s electoral system, and only patriots should rule Hong Kong.

His speech and participation in the forum today fuelled speculation that Beijing will overhaul the SAR's electoral system during the "Two Sessions" meetings this week.

Changes will reportedly include removing 117 district councilors from the Election Committee that chooses the chief executive and scrapping District Council "super seats" in the Legislative Council election.
