Beaten fencer not done yet

Foil fencer Ryan Choi Chun-yin failed to advance to the medal rounds after losing to his Shaanxi opponent in yesterday's quarter-finals at the National Games.

But the 23-year-old fencer is ready to bounce back in the team foil fencing event today with teammates Yeung Chi-ka and Shawn Cheung Siu-lun.

Olympic gold medalist Edgar Cheung Ka-long withdrew from the games after a knee injury last week.

Advancing to the round of 32 after ranking seventh in the pool stage, Choi fended off his teammate Shawn Cheung 15-7 and later beat the second seed Chen Weiquan of Fujian.

Facing off against seventh seed Xu Jie of Shaanxi - the 2019 Asian Youth Games men's foil individual champion - the world number 12 lost 13-15.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong finished its karate competitions with a bronze medal earned by male karate star Lau Chi-ming on Saturday, bringing the SAR's medal tally to one gold and three bronze.

Lau, the elder brother of Olympics bronze medalist Grace Lau Mo-sheung, won bronze at the men's kata event against Guangdong's Yang Kangwei, scoring 24.82 points against Yang's 24.12. The 32-year-old said that he treasures the bronze medal as it is his first in multisport games.
