Arup and AECOM granted consultancy contract for primary design of Northern Link

MTR Corp on Thursday announced that ARUP and AECOM were granted the consultancy contract for primary design of the Northern Link.

The construction works for the Northern Link, a line that aims to connect Tuen Ma Line and Lok Ma Chau Spur Line of the East Rail Line, is expected to commence in 2025, and to end in 2034.

Roger Bayliss, projects director of MTR Corp, said granting the contract to the companies is a milestone for the project.

The Northern Line will enhance the transportation in the area and residents in north New Territories can soon easily travel to the east and the west side of the city easily through the new line.

Works including geological examination began already, he added.

In December 2020, the government invited MTR Corp to proceed with detailed planning and design of the Northern Link project.

The project comprises Kwu Tung Station and construction of a 10.7-kilometer-long railway link between the existing Kam Sheung Road Station of West Rail Line and Kwu Tung Station.

Phase two of the project would be the Northern Link Main Line between Kan Sheung road Station and Kwu Tung Station, with three intermediate stations at San Tin, Ngau Tam Mei and Au Tau.

MTR Corp stressed that the project is crucial to unleashing the development potential of the largely underutilised areas along its alignment, and it also opens up development opportunities with more efficient land uses for the areas.
