Around 60 percent of young people in Hong Kong interviewed wanted to emigrate, and they are not optimistic about the city’s future, according to a CUHK study.
A total of 803 young people, aged between 15 and 30, were interviewed by the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies in March and April, commissioned by District 303 of the Lions Clubs International.
When asked if they are optimistic about the city’s future, the respondents scored a rating of 2.95 out of a full score of 10, with around 60 percent of them wanted to leave Hong Kong to emigrate.
The Hong Kong government has long been encouraging and supporting young people to work and pursue their careers in the Mainland cities of the Greater Bay Area.
The study also shows that only 6.5 percent of the interviewees are willing to work in the Greater Bay Area.
The researcher said that young people's emigration reflects the lack of confidence in Hong Kong’s future. It also showed the worries of young people towards the governance of the authorities.
Meanwhile, 57.5 percent of the respondents said they wanted to leave the city to develop a career outside of China, recording a more than 10 percent increase than three years ago.
