A Beijing loyalist said today that deep scrutiny will be expected for candidates running in Hong Kong’s future elections, quoting the head of the State Council's Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, Xia Baolong.

Lau Siu-kai, vice-president of the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macau Studies, was speaking to reporters after listening to a speech by Xia, who shared his views at a forum on the city’s national security law, via video link from Beijing.

Xia was quoted as saying that anti-China disruptors must not enter the city’s governance structure, making sure only patriots are allowed to run in election committee, Legco and CE races.

Lau said it is foreseeable that candidates taking part in these elections will go under deep scrutiny.

He also said Xia had warned foreign politicians during the forum, that slapping sanctions on Hong Kong and Chinese officials would only stir up negative emotions in the country, prompting citizens opposing to any external intervention of China’s internal affairs.
