Three foreign exchange staffers were robbed of HK$16 million in cash by two robbers in broad daylight after their seven-seater was rammed by a sports car in Yau Ma Tei yesterday.
At least three suspects -- two robbers and their getaway car driver -- got away.
Of the three staffers, a male driver, 29, and a female passenger, 32, were sent to Kwong Wah Hospital with minor injuries.
The third, a male passenger said to be the boss, left once the robbery ended.
The three were heading along Hoi Po Road in a black Toyota Alphard seven-seater at about 1.18pm.
About 100 meters away from the Elements mall on Austin Road, the vehicle was rammed into from behind by a black BMW sportscar before both vehicles came to a halt.
Seconds later, two men wielding hammers and knives exited the BMW and forced open the doors of the seven-seater, shouting "This is a robbery!" before taking two black bags containing HK$8 million in cash each and fleeing in the BMW toward Tai Kok Tsui and going all the way to Sha Tin, police said.
Police are looking for the three suspects and the boss in an operation codenamed "Exigent."
They are also looking into why the boss left the scene and whether there were "insiders" among the staffers.
A passing driver, Kwok, who witnessed and reported the incident, said she saw two vehicles stopping in the middle of the road while she was driving on Hoi Po Road.
"A man jumped out of the seven-seater and then into the BMW before fleeing the scene," she said.
"I thought the man knew people in the seven-seater at first, and that the two vehicles had briefly stopped due to a traffic accident I called the police before the people in the seven-seater said that a robbery had occurred."
She also said one of the three employees - a man in his forties - sustained skin abrasions.
