The Panamanian Society of Internal Medicine recommended that the Government establish a total and mandatory quarantine in the provinces of Panama, Panama West, and Chiriquí for at least 15 days to stop the spread of the virus in these places.
In a statement signed by the President of the Society, Nuvia Batista, it is suggested to establish appropriate containment measures according to epidemiological outbreaks in the rest of the country.
We request the Government to provide the Health personnel with the personal protective equipment necessary for their performance, as well as the medications and medical supplies that are required in the care centers as an emergency, the letter states.
One of the main concerns of doctors is that in four months of pandemic, nearly 400 members of the Health staff have been infected and medical supplies are scarce, so drastic measures must be taken in response to the increase in cases and deaths.
In response to this request, the Health Minister, Luis Francisco Sucre, stated that nothing is ruled out, that this has been being analyzed, but that in order to make a decision like this one must prepare the Government and the population.
We do not rule out any proposal. Being in a situation as difficult as the one we have in the capital and West Panama, we are evaluating the proposal, said Sucre.
In addition, the Ministry of Health on its Twitter account reported that the Government has not taken any decision regarding the recommendation of several medical unions to declare an absolute quarantine and that if this decision is considered, it will be announced in advance.
During his speech on July 1 in the National Assembly, the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo indicated that the reopening could not take place only by blocks, but by regions or activities. Although so far there are no reopening dates for the next blocks.
As of today, Panama records 44,332 confirmed cases and 893 deaths.
At the same time, there are 1,094 are hospitalized, of them 936 in the ward and 158 in intensive care.
